Socket.IO is a JavaScript collection for realtime web applications. It has two components: a client-side library that runs in the browser, and a server-side library for node.js. Both components have an almost identical aPI. Like node.js, it is an event-driven. Socket.IO primarily utilizes the WebSocket protocol, but if needed can fallback on multiple other methods, such as JSONP polling, adobe Flash sockets, and AJAX long polling, while providing the same interface. Although it can be used as basically a wrapper for WebSocket, it provides many more features, including broadcasting to multiple sockets, storing data associated with each client, and asynchronous I/O. It can be installed with the npm (node packaged modules) technique.
